Yeah I was kinda in disbelief myself about this being real, I assumed the light moving behind the columns was simply a clever visual trick based on precise measurements of the structure but the light shining off the side of the building definitely looks like bee-ess.
Not really, I remember from CoD4 you started with an M16 and that along with the second unlock the AK47 were basically the best two assault rifles in the game. Probably would be the same with MW2. Plus they've got death streaks this time around too, so even if you suck you can feel like a winner
But yeah, don't buy this game unless you want to support IW/Activision in making removing dedicated servers the status quo for the industry, not that it matters with how well it's sold already <_< The sad thing is even if it had sold badly on PC, odds are they would have just blamed piracy for causing that anyway and argued that as a good reason to centralise it even more next time around. You just can't win nowadays ...
^JAPR: I might just do that, the single player looks amazingly fun. It's really hard to start out on the online multiplayer, because everybody has better weapons and perks than you, making it really hard to play well at first, since you spend more time dying than anything else.
But yeah, lack of dedicated servers killed any interest in buying it for me too. Not to mention the first wasn't that great anyway, weapons balance was fucked because they modelled it on real weapons, there were waaaay too many annoying power ups, and the gameplay was tipped towards whoever sprays in the general vicinity wins as opposed to precise aiming. By the sounds of it the second one is worse in every respect so no thanks!
In reply to this comment by JAPR: np, don't let his silliness bring you down lol. i haven't played the game yet (due to not being willing to buy it for pc until they let us have dedicated servers, even if that's never), but I heard about it, so I found the vid hugely entertaining. I'll promote until it makes it like it deserves.
Let's be honest here, chances are this guy downloaded some kiddy porn and made up this story. But even then his sentence is obviously vastly disproportionate. 3 years or so of likely being in prison is bad enough, but being labelled a sex offender and essentially never having a job again is just immensely unfair.
I'm sure ultimately most people would agree that in cases like these the punishment inequitable to the crime, but clearly no politician makes it their agenda to change this, and similarly no individual person is going to bother lobbying their member of government about this either.
Which is a pity, because if you consider the fact that having a vast directory of sex offenders which have generally done hardly anything wrong (especially in those cases where it was just kids with a couple of years of age disparity sending naughty pictures to each other) it means that the amount of time that police can devote to supervising the real sex offenders is vastly diminished. Which ultimately allows them to commit more of the serious crimes that people are justifiably so riled up and sensitive about.

The credits were the most creative and enjoyable aspect of the entire single player game.
I dunno, to be perfectly honest there were some nice set piece moments and it's clear their huge budget was put to some good use, but they really did not mix up the stock standard Call of Duty formula one bit. Pushing forward endlessly to stop the infinitely spawning enemies gets tiring very quickly.

The fundamental problem with social sciences is it is far more difficult or impossible to isolate factors in an experiment as you would in a laboratory setting. Therefore the level of certitude that you can attain is far lower than that of an experiment in the physical sciences.
Take the development of a democratic society in various countries. You have an incredibly low number of samples or cases from history versus an incredibly large number of factors - or nuisance variables, if you're looking to investigate certain factors in particular. This makes it impossible to look beyond simply values such as correlations to more complex analysis because you will be getting negative degrees of freedom for the error term in your experiment. Yes if you drastically simplify the experiment by removing factors it will become possible, but you would be assuming away factors. In many cases such as the one mentioned here, there is simply no way to replicate it as in a laboratory experiment either.
That doesn't make it a useless science, although really Feynman never implied this, he simply suggested it was not as rigorous as he would have liked it to be.
Yes, taking economics as an example, it is founded on simplifying assumptions such as rational selfishness and yes, exceptions are constantly being found. When prices go up demand goes down unless it's a Veblen or Giffen good. Yes, markets will generally adjust to supply and demand automatically and price accordingly but wages and prices are generally sticky when moving donwards as workers tend to be unwilling to accept pay drops, and price adjustments are generally staggered and made relative to competitors rather than on the spot.
There's certainly a great deal of uncertainty, but surely this is preferably to being in ignorance over how to best stimulate an economy in recession or what factors contribute to a democratic society. The key point is to take this uncertainty on board when you apply it.
I still can't figure out either a developer or distributor motive for the move to remove dedicated servers/mods.
They're not saving money, the features are clearly already in there since they were unlocked with a hack. It's not like it makes sense to set a precedent for future games either, may as well start it with a game where you don't even consider developing mod/dedicated server support.
It's not like this somehow enables them to charge for DLC whereas otherwise they couldn't. They easily could have done so anyway, because even PC gamers would likely pay for well made content no matter how discontent they are with the decision to charge. It's not like mod support somehow changes this dramatically.
The idea that IW want to restrict balancing and various adjustments that competitive mod makers made is plausible but still comes off as ridiculous considering they have never really made an effort to be competitive friendly and must surely know that people playing competitevely will never settle for the like of AI controlled choppers and air strikes in their game.
